If you’ve ever sat at your desk and daydreamed about being stranded on a tiny patch of white sand in the middle of a turquoise ocean, stop dreaming. Penanas Island (Pulau Penanas) in East Belitung is the real-life version of that Windows wallpaper you’ve been staring at for years.
Located off the coast of Oliver (Momperang) in East Belitung, Penanas is so small that if you blink while on a speedboat, you might miss it. But for those who find it, it offers a level of “off-the-grid” serenity that is becoming a rare luxury.
Penanas is essentially a “sandbar plus.” It’s a pristine stretch of blindingly white, powdery sand surrounded by water so clear it looks like liquid sapphire.
The Icon: For a long time, the island was famous for having just one or two lonely coconut trees standing defiantly in the center of the sand. It is the literal definition of a desert island.
The Vibe: There are no villas. No cafes. No beach clubs. Just you, the sound of the wind, and the gentle lap of the waves. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the digital noise and reconnect with the horizon.
While the island itself is tiny, the world beneath the surface is massive. The coral reefs surrounding Penanas are some of the most untouched in the Belitung Regency.
The Water: Because there is zero industry and very few visitors, the visibility is world-class. You can see straight to the bottom even from the boat.
The Marine Life: Expect to see vibrant soft corals, schools of tropical fish, and a silence that is only broken by the sound of your own breathing. It’s raw, underwater poetry.
One of the most unique things about Penanas is the slope of the sand. At high tide, the island shrinks, making you feel like you are literally standing in the middle of the ocean. It’s a surreal, humbling experience that reminds you how vast and beautiful the sea really is.
Bring Everything: And we mean everything. There is absolutely nothing on the island. Bring your own water, snacks, sunscreen, and a trash bag to take everything back with you.
Sun Protection: There is very little shade. If you’re planning to stay for a few hours, a rash guard or a light beach umbrella is a lifesaver.
How to Get There: You’ll need to charter a local boat from the fishing ports in East Belitung (like Manggar or nearby areas). It’s the perfect “add-on” to a day trip that includes the more rugged islands of the East.
While everyone else is fighting for a spot on the granite rocks of the West, the East offers you a private kingdom. Penanas isn’t about “doing” things; it’s about being. It’s the perfect chapter in your Belitung story where the only characters are the sun, the sand, and the sea.
